## Understanding the dashboard

The TypeSteps dashboard is divided into several key sections:

### Main stats

At the top, you'll see your primary typing count based on the selected view:

* **Day**: Letters typed today with an hourly breakdown chart
* **Week**: Total for the current week with daily bars
* **Month**: Total for the current month with monthly trends

The activity trend chart uses:

* **Area chart** for daily view showing typing rhythm throughout the day
* **Bar charts** for weekly and monthly views

<Note>
  Click and drag on the chart to see specific data points and exact counts.
</Note>

### Daily goal progress

In Day view, you'll see a circular progress indicator showing your progress toward your daily goal (default: 5,000 characters).

Adjust your goal using the slider in the **Insights** panel on the right.

### Activity heatmap

The heatmap shows your typing consistency throughout 2026. Each cell represents one day:

* **Darker colors** indicate more typing activity
* **Light gray** indicates days with no activity
* **Transparent** cells are future dates

Hover over any cell to see the exact date and character count.

### Top applications

The right sidebar shows which apps you type in most. TypeSteps tracks:

* App name with icon
* Total character count per app
* Percentage of total activity

Applications are automatically categorized (Code, Communication, Creation, Browsing, Utility, Other).

### Insights panel

The insights panel displays:

* **Best day**: Your highest typing day ever
* **Streak**: Consecutive days with typing activity
* **Peak hour**: The hour you type most (in 24-hour format)
* **Avg / hour**: Average characters per active hour
* **Daily goal**: Adjustable target with a slider (1,000–20,000 characters)

### Weekly highlights

See your most active and quietest days this week with quick summary cards.

## Troubleshooting

### TypeSteps isn't counting keystrokes

1. Check that Accessibility permission is enabled in **System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility**
2. Ensure tracking is not paused (check the menu bar icon)
3. Try quitting and relaunching TypeSteps

### The app won't open

1. Check macOS version (requires macOS 13+)
2. Try removing and reinstalling via Homebrew
3. Check Console.app for crash logs

### Stats look incorrect

TypeSteps counts letters, numbers, punctuation, and whitespace—but not:

* Modifier keys alone (Shift, Cmd, Ctrl, Option)
* Function keys (F1–F12)
* Keyboard shortcuts (e.g., `Cmd + C`)

## Next steps

Now that you're up and running:

1. **Start typing!** TypeSteps is now tracking your activity across all apps
2. **Check back daily** to see your progress and build a streak
3. **Adjust your goal** based on your typical activity level
4. **Explore themes** to personalize your dashboard

Happy typing!
